R is a widely used statistical package that provides an environment for statistical analysis and the production of graphics. The software is free to download and can be used on multiple platforms. The introduction of R brought an open source version of the programming language S to a wider audience. The language was initially written by Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka of the Department of Statistics in the University of Auckland. Since mid 1997 there has been an R Core Development Team who continue to develop the software and have write access to the R source.
