Forty years have passed since McHarg's Design with Nature (Natural History Press, 1969) made strides toward multi-disciplinary solutions to bridging the chasms between design and policy, ecology, and engineering. But have environmental planning education and theory advanced far past that 1969 milestone? Even as environmental issues have become increasingly integrated into planning processes, one of the ongoing challenges facing thernplanning and design communities is the need for sound but simple frameworks to guide decision makers in addressing these constantly evolving issues. This problem has implications both for the professional and the academic community, since useful frameworks could serve as an early shaper for how our students conceptualize the relationships between policy and the physical environment and also serve later conversations and negotiations. The recent release of the paperback version of The Living Landscape by Steiner provides a great resource for a broad audience.
