Remembering Walt Luffsey

Walter S. Luffsey passed away in Florida, on August 20, 2008 after a long illness. Walt had a long and distinguished career with the FAA and industry, including serving as FAA Associate Administrator for Flight Standards and FAA Associate Administrator for Air Traffic. He began his career in air traffic control as a controller in Norfolk, Virginia. He soon progressed to Supervisory Air Traffic Control Specialist at Atlantic City, NJ. In the ATC portion of his career, he was qualified and worked in all three options: tower, en route, and flight service station. Walter earned his US Air Force pilot wings in 1956. He held an Airplane Transport Pilot certificate, having logged several thousand flying hours and flown more than 40 types of aircraft in his career. He was best known to ATCA members for his steadfast and visible leadership during the challenging days after the controller strike of 1981. He was an ATCA Honorary Member, and Chairman of the ATCA Publications Committee for over 10 years. His wife Louise, and two adult children survive him.
