The following article looks at the planning and operational implementation of Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) by NAV CANADA, the private sector company that provides civil air navigation services in the vast airspace over Canada. The article reviews NAV CANADA'S original decision to go with ADS-B, the three stages of deployment thus far, and the results achieved both for NAV CANADA and its airline customers, concluding with a brief look at the company s plans for future deployment. In a span of just over three years, NAV CANADA has added more than four million square kilometres of surveillance airspace through deployment of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B).
