In Memoriam Bin Cheng (1921-2019)

One of the most distinguished representatives in the area of air and space law has passed away: Prof. Bin Cheng. His long life of almost 100 years covers the time span of international aviation law - from the Paris Convention 1919 until today. Bin Cheng was a native Chinese from Taiwan who moved to England with his parents - his father having been a judge at the Permanent Court of International Justice -, where he started his studies and later became research assistant to Prof. Georg Schwarzenberger (1908 - 1991) for his PhD. Between 1950 and his retirement in 1986 he was teaching international law and international air law at the University of London. Many of his scientific contributions were extraordinary. The international law community remembers his famous article on "United Nations General Assembly Resolutions on Outer Space - 'Instant' International Customary Law?", published in the Indian Journal of International Law1 which is closely connected to space law because the examples given by him represent UN Resolutions on space law.
