A naval shipyard in Thanlyin, Myanmar, has begun work on what appears to be a new type of guided-missile frigate for the country's navy. Satellite images from December 2020 indicate that the vessel will have a beam of about 15 m. This would give it an estimated overall length of between 120 m and 135 m when completed, making it Myanmar's largest surface combatant yet. The Myanmar Navy operates a fleet of five frigates, including one Aug Zeya-class and two Kyan Sit Thar-class vessels that were locally built and entered service between 2010 and 2015, and two former Chinese Navy Jianghu-class frigates that were built in the 1980s and transferred to Myanmar in 2012.
