Corps values: Future Commando Force strategy takes the Royal Marines back to its roots

The UK Royal Marines (RM) has embarked on a transformation process intended to deliver a new vision for the delivery of expeditionary elements in the littoral. The aim of this Future Commando Force (FCF) strategy is to capitalise on the quality and training of RM personnel, and the opportunities offered by new equipment and technology, to create a more versatile, agile, and lethal force. According to Major General Charlie Stick-land, Commandant General Royal Marines (CGRM), the process of developing the FCF began in late 2017 following the publication of the influential House of Commons Defence Committee's report on the RM and the UK's amphibious capability, entitled 'Sunset for the Royal Marines?'. The somewhat negative outlook of this paper, he told Jane's, "was a powerful catalyst for a process of self-analysis of how the amphibious capability and commando forces can add competitive value to the UK's defence".
