The US Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC) Directorate of Development Planning, located at Los Angeles Air Force Base, California, issued a request for information in mid-April covering prototypes for the Third Generation Infrared Surveillance (3GIRS) Wide-Field-of-View (WFOV) Infrared Ground Segment, writes Doug Richardson.rnThe 3GIRS project office is assessing potential contractors for the task of developing a low-cost ground segment prototype to be used in WFOV ground-segment risk reduction. This prototype is intended to support theatre missile warning as a primary mission, but secondary goals are in areas such as battlespace awareness, missile defence, and technical intelligence.
