Australian DoD reviews 'defence innovation system'

Australia has announced a review of defence innovation, science, and technology. The Department of Defence (DoD) in Canberra said on 13 September that the assessment will help ensure the Australian Defence Force (ADF) has continued access to modern technologies.It said the review will examine the "defence organisation in its entirety" to establish how it can "more effectively deliver homegrown, innovative capabilities" for the ADF. The review, scheduled to be complete by the year end, will be led by David Peever, former managing director of metals and mining group Rio Tinto Australia.The review will have several focus areas, including: strengthening links between industry and academia; simplifying contracts to accelerate concept to capability; improving defence technology and related infrastructure; and Improving the commercialisation of state-funded research and development (R&D). The review will focus on whether Australia's main defence science and technology initiatives meet the ADF's capability requirements.
