Although conventional military requirements, such as troop numbers and the latest hardware, remain vital to security, defensive forces are now stretched across greater requirements and zones of operation. Governments face a tight balancing act to maximise the combined effect of new technologies with conventional equipment. To meet the demands of modern warfare, science and technology have been put at the forefront of the UK government's Integrated Review and Defence Command White Paper on the United Kingdom's defence posture. The ability of a country to draw on its science and technology base to explore, experiment, evaluate, and exploit new technologies, techniques, and tactics will be vital to future operational advantage, security, and prosperity. Ensuring independence in defence development and procurement is also essential to a national defensive strategy.
