US military opens all combat roles to women

The US Department of Defense has officially opened all combat positions to women, who were previously barred from many 'excepted' jobs and, prior to 2013, were barred from all ground combat roles. "I'm announcing my decision not to make continued exceptions, that is, to proceed with opening all these remaining occupations and positions to women," Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said on 3 December. Exemptions after the 2013 opening of about 110,000 ground combat positions has still kept women from many infantry, armour, and reconnaissance jobs, and some special operations units. Carter said the military services must now open all military occupational specialties to women within 30 days.
