Syrian government forces begin push to retake Tadmur and Palmyra ruins

Syrian troops have begun an offensive front in the country's central desert region in a bid to recapture the city of Tadmur, home of the Palmyra ruins, from the Islamic State. Having been secured with Russian air support in March 2016, Tadmur and the Palmyra ruins were recaptured by the Islamic State when pro-government forces were distracted by the final assault on the rebel enclave in eastern Aleppo city in December 2016.
