People use plastic bags for an average of 12 minutes, yet scientists estimate that the bags take 500 to 1,000 years to degrade. Even then, the plastic never completely breaks down, making it a truly "eternal" substance. Made from hundreds of plastic grocery bags collected by artist Maris Polanco and her friends, this enormous jellyfish highlights the problem of plastics in the ocean and the dangers they present for ocean wildlife. Floating in ocean tides, these not-so-ephemeral wisps of plastic resemble a favorite snack-jellyfish-of many sea creatures, including whales, birds, turtles, and seals. Plastics are implicated in the deaths of thousands of these animals every year.
