The history of photovoltaic energy dates back to 1839, when nineteen-year-old Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect while conducting experiments with electrolytic cells. Today, in addition to the building sector, photovoltaic energy is applied in a range of sectors (some niche or experimental ones and others more established), always with the same objective: to supply electrical energy without recourse to fossil fuels.
