La Defense, the district of Paris known for the avant-garde buildings erected there in recent years, will soon boast a new architectural feature: a tower destined to accommodate both commercial and business activities. What drives this new enterprise is a real desire to get round the problem that plagues this area, which like any area given over mainly to administrative and office buildings, does not have the range of functions that makes a city seem truly lived in, in different ways and by different types of people throughout the 24 hours of the day.
