Rotterdam, the largest European container port, had reason to celebrate success in March, when it became the first hub in Europe to handle more than 1 million containers in a single month. But the hub did not forget its Japanese friends and partners of many years' standing in the celebrations. It donated money to support the victims of the tsunami. On the evening of the last day of March 2011 the port of Rotterdam became the first European port to handle 1 million containers (measured in teu) in a single month. The record was reached when a box was unloaded from the ltd Oriente. In total, 47 vessels were loaded and unloaded that special day, handling a total of almost 50,000 teu. This represented a significant milestone in the development of Rotterdam, an ongoing success story since 1966. Hans Smits, the Rotterdam port authority's CEO, said that many shipping companies, shippers, terminals and countries have contributed to bringing the hub to where it stands today.
