The president is the commander in chief of the armed forces. Day-to-day oversight of the military is exercised by the secretary of state for the armed forces, a member of the Cabinet. Three undersecretaries, usually senior officers of each service, are subordinate to the secretary of state for the armed forces, with each responsible for his respective service. Operational control of each service is exercised by its general staff, which is headed by a chief of staff, who is assisted by a sub-chief. In 2000, the previous three military zones were reorganized into five new ones, numbered one through five, with the capital located in the 1 st Military Region.
