Urban Poverty in China is a work of dedication, commitment, seriousness and profound expertise. The research, a study of 25 poor neighborhoods in six large Chinese cities (Guangzhou, Xi'an, Nanjing, Wuhan, Harbin and Kunming), the product of the work of four scholars, spanned five years (early pilot work took place in 2002, but the large-scale household survey was undertaken from December 2006 to June 2007). The presentation is replete with statistical tables, photographs of neighborhoods, historical background and a thorough familiarity with the relevant scholarship.
