After the dramatic events that took place in Egypt on January 2011, the economist and urban planner David Sims released his newest book Understanding Cairo: The Logic of a City out of Control in February of the same year. The author starts his book questioning: Why try to understand a metropolis such as Cairo? What is so unique about Cairo?rnSuch an inquiry is quite intriguing, especially when it comes from a passionate resident of Cairo for the past three decades like Sims. And to answer his question the author escorts the reader of his book on a journey; viewing Cairo within a nostalgic frame, beginning with its monarchy's golden ages, moving on to the intensified national pride of Cairo as the capital of the Arab World after 1952, and ending with the new identity of modern Cairo as a Greater Village instead of Greater Cairo.
