When Needed by Nobody was published in 2009, Europe celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the fall of communism in the Eastern bloc, marking an end to totalitarian statism and the advent of democracy. Amid studies analysing structural changes in former socialist societies that treat the deficiencies en route to a market economy and civil society as inevitable yet surmountable evils of the transition period, Hojdestrand's book reveals some systemic continuities and persistent shortcomings of the social arrangements constituting the Soviet legacy in contemporary Russia.
