摘要

With this work, Eleonora Pasotti revives the great Northern American tradition of political science research that apprehends big cities as the cradles of new forms of political exchange and relationships between political elites, organizations and the citizenry. The book presents an analysis of new voting behaviours and new logics of electoral mobilization on the one hand, and an appraisal of the new forms of urban governance on the other. By exploring the cases of three cities - Bogota, Naples and Chicago - whose political systems were long dominated by machines, Pasotti also offers an explanation of the processes through which urban political systems can discard patronage as the predominant form of political exchange.
