TRANSPORT RESEARCH FOR A CHANGING AND SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

After World War II, the focus of transport policy and research has primarily been on investment in mobility of people and goods in order to facilitate the recovery of the economy in the post-war world. The tremendous growth of transport that followed led to an increase in negative effects such as congestion and pollution. Even with the great advances in technology and research, we have not yet managed to avoid fully these negative externalities. The question remains what future transport research should focus on to ensure that in a rapidly changing world transport itself is sustainable and that it will contribute to a sustainable society.
