Though theological interpretation of Scripture is by now well-seated in the academy, dogmatic reflection on the nature of Scripture lags behind; with a few notable exceptions, recent literature on the doctrine of Scripture is still relatively sparse. In one sense, this is as it should be: expectant exegesis is theologically primary. But reflection on the principles of interpretation cannot be delayed indefinitely, and at its heart is theological consideration of the nature of Scripture. Clear thought on such matters as the tasks and ends of biblical interpretation, the character and acts of the interpreter, choice of exegetical procedures or the relation of biblical to general hermeneutics, depends upon clarity about Scripture's properties.
