Love's Wisdom is a challenging collection of essays on the theme of love as a philosophical category, informed largely by religion and theology. The editors, Norman Wirzba and Bruce Ellis Benson, present this work as a focus on the philosophy of religion in the continental tradition, reversing the classical notion of philosophy as the 'love of wisdom' to the 'wisdom of love'. Perhaps the chosen painting on the front cover best illustrates the direction of the book's chapters: Vincent Van Gogh's The Good Samaritan (1890), in which the Dutch post-Impressionist captures the earthy struggle of love as a lived ethic, displayed in the event of sacrificial assistance to a stranger.
