God Incarnate: Explorations in Christology

This book represents the second phase of a project in analytic Christology by Oliver Crisp, Reader in Theology at Bristol University. As many readers of this journal will know, Dr Crisp attempts to inhabit the Catholic and Reformed tradition of theological reflection with analytical clarity gained by employment of conceptual tools drawn from the discipline of analytic philosophy. In so doing he advocates a procedural - rather than a substantive - use of reason and, specifically, of philosophical tools (p. 2). Indeed, he claims that 'theological issues under scrutiny are made clearer using methods borrowed and adapted from philosophy for a theological purpose' (pp. 1-2). Crisp pursues analytical theology in conversation with a host of theologians, who are themselves conversant with classical christological orthodoxy, and for the sake of constructive theological purposes. While he has written other works in a strictly historical or analytic mode, he seeks to employ these disciplines for a positive purpose.
