As Dana Priest tells it, a 76-year-old American woman wheeled herself to the security scanner at the airport. She fumbled as she removed her tennis shoes. She lifted herself out of the wheelchair; she grabbed the side of the X-ray machine and teetered in her socks. The security guards folded her wheelchair and rolled it through the scanner while keeping an eye on the frail woman. A guard asked her if she could make it without pain, and she answered, "Oh, sure."
