Doing Intelligence in the Classroom

In 2011, Richards J. Heuer Jr. and Randolph H. Pherson published a methodological handbook, Structured Analytic Techniques for Intelligence Analysis, in which they described scores of tradecraft techniques, while providing guidance on when they should be used to overcome specific impediments or to help resolve analytic uncertainties. The handbook marked a major advance in the study and practice of intelligence analysis and clearly had experienced analysts, working in an information-enabled workplace, as its intended audience.
