Uri Bar-Joseph's The Angel can be easily sliced into six different publications, each one worthy of acclaim. It is a fine contribution to further public and scholarly understanding of why intelligence failure occurs, and how intelligence organizations become encumbered bureaucracies. The book also deals with how to develop good tradecraft for a successful intelligence operation, in addition to providing additional clarification of the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, and offers a perfect example of the forces that drive people into espionage. This saga from a non-fictional book about espionage is worthy of a John le Carre novel.
