Smashing WordPress: Beyond the Blog

Web logs (or "blogs" as they are more commonly known) are now a popular vehicle for expressing one's thoughts to a wider audience while at the same time offering interested parties the opportunity to add a commentary to the stream which the original author has initiated. WordPress is an environment which offers a quick and no nonsense mechanism for deploying, maintaining and enhancing blog material. However this simple description of Word-Press in no way does justice to this rich and powerful Open Source product. The author's intention is to show that WordPress is more than just a blog publishing platform offering fast deployment and flexibility. In his words he wants "to show you how to utilize the power of WordPress, and provide a creative spark to help you build WordPress powered sites that go beyond the obvious". To this end the reader is introduced to a powerful information management tool which has the capacity to allow the developer "to build just about anything". The fact that the central components of the platform are PHP and MySQL means that it deserves serious attention from those involved in the development of interactive Web-sites and the management of information.
