Development of eco-compatible polymers with cyclodextrins for the treatment of wastewater from the textile industry

Textile industries generate polluting effluents that affect both soil and water quality. Dyes present in wastewater are considered important contaminants; these are not biodegradable. Indigo dye in fabric dyeing generates contaminated wastewater, this is the case in Luján (Argentina). The use of cyclodextrins (CDs), cyclic molecules of natural origin derived from starch, is a new and effective treatment for removing dyes. Due to their water solubility, it is not possible to use them in remediation without immobilisation on a support to the formation of non-toxic and eco-compatible CDs-Sepharose polymers. βCD complexes were compared with a mixture of αβγCDs obtained in our laboratory. The removal of the indigo dye using βCD-Sepharose polymers and mixture of CDs was 49% and 52%, respectively after 5 min of contact with a solid/liquid ratio of 4g/12 mL.
