Un autógrafo de la traducción de Homero de Gonzalo Pérez (Ulyxea XIV-XXIV) anotado por Juan Páez de Castro y el Cardenal Mendoza y Bovadilla

The first Spanish translation of Homer was published between 1550 and 1562 by Gon-nzalo Pérez, humanist and politician who served as Secretary of King Felipe II. Since then18th Century there has been some confusion regarding the authorship of the transla-ntion, as some scholars suspected that it actually was the work of Juan Páez de Castro,nan outstanding hellenist and friend of Pérez. A manuscript held by the University ofnBologna, written by Pérez own hand and studied here for the first time, not just con-nfirms Pérez authorship and the cooperation of Páez de Castro in reading and correct-ning the translation, but also the collaboration – completely unnoticed up today – ofnanother important scholar, the Cardinal Francisco de Mendoza y Bovadilla. The man-nuscript, a first hand example of Renaissance translation and amicitia philologorum, pro-nvides an unusual opportunity to see a XVIth-century translator at work and constitutesna precious source for the study of Homeric scholarship in that period.
