Banca monte dei paschi di siena is to make one last-ditch effort to convince investors to hand over €5bn before a deadline to bolster its capital buffers expires at the end of the year. With just two weeks to go, the bank has reopened a debt-to-equity swap and warned investors that a lack of participation could lead to a state rescue and bail-in of bondholders on terms much worse than those being offered in the swap.
