Late surge boosts M&A in 2016

A surge in M&A announcements in the fourth quarter, worth roughly US$1.2trn, lifted M&A deal volume last year to US$3.7trn, making it the third best year on record, according to Thomson Reuters data. Global announced M&A cracked US$1trn for the first time in the fourth quarter last year thanks to deals including AT&T's US$107bn move for Time Warner. Including AT&T, seven of the year's 10 biggest transactions were announced during the fourth quarter.
