Driverless financing plans accelerate

Automakers are accelerating plans to adapt their business models to cope with the widespread adoption of autonomous and electric vehicles that could take place over the next decade. Last Tuesday two of the world's biggest car companies, Volkswagen and Ford, signed an alliance at the Detroit auto show to develop commercial vehicles, and hinted strongly that they would cooperate on electric and autonomous driving technology as well. "With the fundamental changes in the industry, carmakers are therefore exploring alliances," said Herbert Diess, chief executive of Volkswagen. "It just makes sense to pool resources in clearly defined areas."
