Italy Outlines Plan to Tackle Trash Crisis; EU Commission Calls for Additional Measures

Newly elected Italian Prime Minister Silvo Berlusconi May 21 held his first cabinet meeting in the city of Naples to call attention to the continuing trash crisis there. The government brokered deals with nearby regions to accept some of the 4,500 metric tons of garbage reported to still remain on the streets of the southern Italian city. Officials also fast-tracked plans to upgrade or reopen a total of six nearby landfills.
