Alberta's New Environmental Monitoring Agency to Initially Focus on Oil Sands Region

The Canadian province of Alberta plans to establish an arm's-length environmental monitoring agency that will initially focus on soil, air, and water quality and biodiversity in the Lower Athabasca oil sands region. The agency's establishment, announced by the government Oct. 17, was a key recommendation of an Environmental Monitoring Working Group report submitted to the Alberta government in June.
