Japan Plans to Lower Price Paid for Solar Power; Less Expensive Equipment Cited

Japan's government plans to lower its set purchase price for electricity generated from solar panels from 42 yen (48 cents) per kilowatt-hour to less than 40 yen in fiscal 2013, which begins April 1, in response to rapidly declining equipment prices, the minister of economy, trade, and industry said Jan. 21. The purchase price for other types of renewable energy, such as wind and geothermal, will remain unchanged, Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said at a media luncheon at the Japan National Press Club.
