Ontario Looks to Environmentally Conscious Investors in Growing Market for Green Bonds

Ontario is seeking as much as half a billion dollars from environmentally conscious investors before year's end to finance infrastructure projects by jumping into the ballooning market for green bonds. "We want to develop a Canadian dollar green bond market," said Gadi Mayman, chief executive officer of the Ontario Financing Authority, in a Sept. 10 interview at Bloomberg's New York headquarters. "Our plan is to be the first government in Canada." The province will issue C$300 million to C$500 million ($451 million) of bonds "in the fall" that are certified by the nonprofit Center for International Climate and Environmental Research-Oslo, or CICERO, Mayman said. Ontario is joining a boom in green bonds that will see issuance this year triple to $40 billion globally, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.
