摘要

Sens. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Sheldon White-house (D-R.I.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and four others are asking the Interior Department to take the climate change impact of black carbon, or soot, into account when it proposes updated air permitting regulations for offshore drilling in the Alaskan Arctic. "Current DOI regulations for air emissions from outer continental shelf operations become less stringent the farther the source is from the shore," they wrote in an April 1 letter to Interior Secretary Sally Jewell. "Yet this approach does not take into account the harmful effects of black carbon on snow and sea ice in the Arctic far from shore."
