International Chemical Bodies Considering New Curbs on Highly Hazardous Pesticides

Chemical regulators from around the world are considering a new proposal to identify and phase out the use of highly hazardous pesticides, including endosulfan, chlorpyrifos and paraquat. Led by members of the African Union, an organization of 54 African states, participants at a meeting of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM) open-ended working group agreed to consider new limits on the use of pesticides that pose serious health risks. "Much greater regional and global coordination [is] needed to ensure their complete elimination and substitution and thus take a significant step toward achieving the 2020 goal" of sustainable chemical management, said a draft report by the United Nations Environment Program's Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).
