Whilst it has been self-evident for years that renewables and alternative energy sources would come to represent an expanding share of the world's energy markets, the focus has now shifted to the sheer pace of change, and the increasingly dramatic disruptions that we are witnessing to conventional sources of power. This has been sudden, striking, largely unexpected and-for those involved-deeply encouraging. For governments, it is also at times embarrassing, as policy-makers are caught out yet again by the speed and depth of innovation. Assumptions have to be revised, policy goals revisited, approaches re-thought, faster than anyone expected. This affects energy lawyers as much as anyone.
