摘要

From the inception of the Nigerian oil industry in the 1950s until the present day, gas associated with the production of crude oil has been released into the atmosphere. This is known as "gas-flaring". Flared gas comprises harmful greenhouse gases that constitute Nigeria's primary source of carbon emissions, which can lead to climate change. Between 1960 and 2015, the Nigerian Government adopted several responses to the issue of gas-flaring with varying degrees of success. In this article, the author provides a sequential analysis of Nigeria's response to gas-flaring, arguing that Nigeria s reliance on multinational oil companies for oil-exploitation technologies; Nigeria, on occasions, not funding its share of joint ventures with multinational oil companies; and political conflicts within Nigeria itself are primarily responsible for Nigeria not having been able to end gas-flaring thus far.
