Modern high-speed weaving machinery must operate at maximum efficiency. The higher the weft-insertion rate, then the greater the productivity loss for any stoppage, eg. warp-thread breakage. For this reason, sizes are applied to most warps in order to prevent warp-thread breakages. Continuous-filament warp yarns are sized to prevent filamen-tation and provide lubrication of the yarns through the heald shafts, as well as to decrease electrostatic problems. In staple-fibre yarns, the functions of the size coating are essentially to decrease surface hairiness, increase strength and promote lubrication.
