The effects of different organophos-phorus and brominated-compound based flame-retardant (FR) commercial finishing agents on the functional properties and thermal behaviour of cotton, polyester, viscose and P/V blends were studied. It was observed that organophosphorus-based FR finishing agents enhanced flame retardancy in polyester by enhancing the melt-dripping phenomenon and, in the case of cellulose, enhanced flame retardancy through the formation of char. All finishes were found durable up to five commercial washings. However, drastic reduction in tensile strength (up to 50%) in the case of cotton was observed after finishing treatment. After the FR treatment, bending length and drape % of the fabric increased. About 15-20% loss in air-permeability value was observed.
