The committee for socio-economic analysis (SEAC) of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has launched a consultation on its proposed backing of ECHA's plan to restrict the use of decaBDE as a flame retardant. SEAC, however, wants products containing decaBDE on sale before the restriction comes into force to remain available for purchase. The committee's final opinion will come in September, with the consultation lasting until August 14. ECHA wants to block the sale of decaBDE, and also of chemical mixtures, textiles and other items containing the flame retardant where concentrations of the chemical exceed 0.1 % of product weight. ECHA has proposed derogations for second-hand items, electrical and electrical equipment, as well as articles used in aviation.
