The abundance and species structure of planktonic rotifers and phytoplankton in lakes of different trophic status in Polesie Region (Eastern Poland)

Rotifers are the major component of limnoplankton and feed on many microorganisms, such as bacteria, algae and protozoans. Many species are detritivorous and have important influence on lake trophic status (Radwan 1973). Some species are used as reliable indicators of water trophy (Radwan 1973, Radwan et al. 1998). Phytoplankton as a main producer of organic matter plays an important role in lake functions (Zurek & Dumniecka 1989). The aim of this work was to determine the abundance and species structure of planktonic rotifers and phytoplankton and quality and quantity relations between them in four trophically different lakes of Leczna-Wlodawa Lakeland.
