This guide to the personal archives of scientists from the sixteenth to the twentieth century preserved in libraries and archives services in France is important and very welcome. It comprises a short but valuable introduction which explains how the guide was compiled, its scope and its limitations; the body of the guide which presents an alphabetical list of the scientists with for each scientist a list of the repositories holding relevant archival materials; and two indexes, the first of the places where the archives are held and the second of the scientists themselves. There are entries for some 1100 scientists in the guide and information on the holdings of some 140 repositories relating to them.
