PERCEPCIONES LOCALES HACIA LA CONSERVACIÓN BIOLÓGICA EN LA COMUNIDAD DE VILA VELHA, PERNAMBUCO, BRASIL

Muchos investigadores enfatizan la importancia de los estudios acerca de la percepción ambiental para delinear estra- tegias de conservación de los ecosistemas. En ese sentido, se estudiaron las percepciones de miembros de la comunidad de Vila Velha, Isla de Itamaracá, noreste de Brasil, con relación a su ambiente natural. La Isla de Itamaracá tiene dos áreas protegidas y seis reservas naturales que justifican el desarrollo de programas de conservación de los recursos naturales en la localidad. Se emplearon diversas estrategias para estudiar la percepción ambiental, que incluyeron entrevistas con 80 moradores y observación participativa. Las entrevistas fueron llevadas a cabo utilizando preguntas subjetivas y objetivas. No se encontró una fuerte asociación entre edad o tiempo de residencia y las ideas conservacionistas. Igualmente, estas ideas son independientes del nivel de instrucción o género. Los entrevistados tienen actitudes positivas hacia el ambiente y comprenden su importancia, existiendo un estrecho vínculo entre ellos y su habitat. A pesar de las actitudes positivas es escasa la información acerca de la importancia del ambiente y su manejo. Debe desarrollarse programas de educación y manejo ambiental que consideren los valores de los miembros de la comunidad.%Many researchers have emphasized the importance of environmental perception studies on laying out strategies for pro- tecting natural ecosystems. The perceptions of members of the community of Vila Velha, Itamaraca Island, Northeast Brazil, were studied in relation to its natural environment. Two environmental protection areas and six natural reserves in the island of Itamaraca justify the natural resource conservation programs in the locality. Different strategies were used to study environmental perception, which included interviews with 80 villagers and participant observation. The interviews were performed using subjective and objective questions. No strong association between age or time of residence and conservationist ideas was observed. Similarly, these ideas are independent from the level of formal education or gender. The respondents have positive attitudes in relation to the environment and understand its importance; there is a powerful link between them and the environment they live in. In spite of the positive attitudes shown by some villagers, there is a lack of essential information about the importance of the environment and its management. Therefore, there is the need to create environmental management and environmental educational programs, and these should consider community member values.
