The Secret World comprises a number of essays on intelligence by Hugh Trevor-Roper (later Lord Dacre). The subjects covered include Admiral Wilhelm Canaris (head of the Abwehr), Kim Philby and books by or on Anthony Cave-Brown, William Stephenson, Bletchley Park, R.V. Jones, Percy Sillitoe, Dick White, Anthony Blunt, Michael Straight, Peter Wright, Otto John and Reinhard Gehlen.Two appendices include correspondence with Patrick Reilly (who became the personal assistant to Sir Stewart Menzies ('C') in May 1942), and two reviews by Charles Stuart (one of Trevor-Roper's wartime recruits) of books on Philby. Editor Edward Harrison contributes a first-class introduction (pp.1-34) to Trevor-Roper's wartime work. He has also added about 60 pages of informative endnotes to the essays.
