Pipelines operating in the fuel-energy industry are, as a rule, objects of potential danger. The use of modern methods that enable detection of dangerous defects of welded joints introduced during pipeline construction, modernisation and repair work, would provide safe and reliable operation of such dangerous objects. This is especially important when we are talking about pipes with small diameters that are traditionally considered to be 'inconvenient' for defectoscopy procedures. The work recently carried out by the,Institute VNIIST (All-Russian scientific-research institute of pipelines construction), makes it possible to develop the instruments for rapid ultrasonic (US) quality inspection of butt welded joints of piping with diameter up to 500 mm and wall thickness from 2 to 10 mm. Such pipes, are, as a rule, used for oil and oil products transportation in the municipal gas supply systems, .in heat power plants and at other industrial enterprises.
